On this "From the Vault" episode of Big Blend Radio's Champagne Sundays show, award-winning author Barbara Casey discusses her book, “Velvalee Dickinson: The “Doll Woman” Spy,” a carefully researched glimpse into the “Doll Woman’s” life as a collector of dolls, and as the highest paid American woman who spied for the Imperial Japanese Government during World War II. She became the first American woman to face the death penalty on charges of spying for a wartime enemy. Eventually the espionage charge was dropped, and Dickinson was sentenced to 10 years at Alderson Correctional Facility, a woman’s prison, and fined $10,000.
Featured music is: “Toy” by Doreen Taylor.

This "From the Vault" episode of Big Blend Radio's "Quality of Life" show features writer and author Francesca Grossman, who discusses her book, “Not Weakness: Navigating the Culture of Chronic Pain” (April 12023, She Writes Press). In this book, she shares her personal experiences and those of 20 other women with chronic pain, and challenges the toxic culture of shame, humiliation, and fear that surrounds pain, particularly in women.
With over 50 million people in the US living with chronic pain and almost 70% of them being women, Francesca set out to find answers to one big question; where are these people? Through her expert interviews with 20 remarkable women who share similar lived experiences, Francesca reveals a heartbreaking shared truth: chronic pain is a daily struggle for many women that leaves them with feelings of guilt, embarrassment, and anxiety about the future.
